Statement by the High Representative on the attack against UNIFIL peacekeepers

Eight Austrian peacekeepers participating in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were injured today following rocket attacks stemming likely from Hezbollah or an affiliated group.

Attacks on UN peacekeepers are a violation of international law and are totally unacceptable. The EU reiterates its call to all sides to fully uphold obligations to guarantee the safety and security of UN personnel at all times.

The EU renews its unwavering support to UNIFIL’s role.

The Council extended the mandate of the EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) military operation in the Mediterranean - EUNAVFOR MED IRINI - until 31 March 2027. The decision was taken in the wake of the Strategic Review of the operation carried out by the Political and Security Committee.
