Syria: joint statement by High Representative/Vice-President Kallas, Commissioner Šuica and Commissioner Lahbib on the formation of the new transitional government

The European Union welcomes the formation of the new transitional government in Syria. The EU is ready to engage with the new government in order to help tackle the immense challenges ahead.  The aspirations of all Syrians must be fulfilled, as recently underscored at the IX Brussels Syria Conference. The European Union will stand by the Syrian people, while making sure that the commitments of the new government towards a peaceful and inclusive transition are respected.

The European Union reiterates its steadfast support for a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned transition process, peaceful, inclusive of all components of Syrian society in their diversity where comprehensive transitional justice ensures accountability for all crimes and meaningfully contributes to national reconciliation. In this context, the process initiated by the National Dialogue Conference, held on 25 February, will play a crucial role.

It is also fundamental that all external actors fully respect Syria’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The EU condemns any attempts to undermine its stability and prospects for a peaceful and inclusive political transition.
